Cougars Announce New Assistant Coach

Prince George, BC - The Prince George Cougars are proud to announce that their search for a new assistant coach brought them right back home again. Prince George hockey talent Stewart Malgunas will join the Cougars behind the bench as assistant coach.

“Stewart is a hometown guy, which was very appealing to us,” says Cougars Assistant General Manager Dallas Thompson. “We feel that he brings a whole lot to the table for our younger players, and our defensive corps, with his past experience. He played 13 years of pro hockey and now he is using that experience for us.”

Stewart played in the WHL before embarking on a pro hockey adventure that led him to the AHL, IHL, Europe, and four NHL teams (Flyers, Jets, Capitals and Flames). He was a rugged, stay-at-home defenseman who can now stay at home and still be involved in world class hockey.

“I am very happy to be a part of this team. I know what this team means to this town,” Stewart says. “It is a great opportunity to work with a guy like (Cougars head coach) Ed Dempsey who has a lot to teach. We have a good young team, and I’m looking forward to working with that young talent.”

In addition to pro hockey, he was also a WHL player and won a gold medal as a member of Canada’s 1990 National Junior Team, so he knows what this age group needs to win at the highest level. He will start his official coaching duties by running the Cougars Hockey School this August with select Cougars players, then start the training camp process.

“I’ve only been here in Prince George for summers, the past 15 years, so it means a lot to me that I don’t have to uproot my family for the next two years at least. That is really gratifying he says. His wife, Sheryl, is also born and raised in Prince George, and they have two daughters, Jayden (5 years old) and Cassidy (2 years old). He says “I did about all I could do in pro hockey until my body told me not to do that anymore. Now it is time to put my mind to work for hockey.”
