CAPITALS SHOPPING JAGR?

WASHINGTON POST: Jason La Canfora reports "NHL sources" claim the Capitals are trying to trade superstar winger Jaromir Jagr, but his hefty contract is attracting little interest from fellow GMs who are trying to pare down their payroll in anticipation of changes to the next Collective Bargaining Agreement. GM George McPhee apparently canvassed the league three weeks ago to let his fellow GMs know he'd entertain offers for Jagr, and La Canfora reports talks may intensify as the June draft weekend approaches. McPhee stated he's received offers for lots of players but wouldn't specify who. The Caps would have to absorb part of Jagr's salary to move him, but sources say they don't want to do that. Jagr has not requested a trade but is believed to have clashed with head coach Bruce Cassidy.

Spector's Note: My thanks to the good folks at Sabresfan.com and the Hockey Alliance for sending this in. Thus far, we've heard no formal word from the Caps that Jagr could be available. It'll be interesting to hear what their reaction will be to this report. La Canfora is right, however, about the difficulty they'll have in dumping Jagr's salary if this report is tru.

JAGR FOR LINDROS DEAL IN THE WORKS?

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: John Dellapina reports "NHL sources" and a report from TSN suggests the owners of the NY Rangers and Washington Capitals have discussed a possible trade that would send Caps winger Jaromir Jagr to the Rangers in exchange for centre Eric Lindros. Such a deal, however, would depend on if the Rangers could successfully renegotiate Lindros's contract and the Rangers willingness to pick up Jagr's huge salary (now worth $66 million over the next six years). Dellapina reports "members of both organizations scoffed at the notion last night. "

Spector's Note: My thanks to "John A" for sending this in. For those of you keeping score, that's Mario Lemieux, John LeClair and now Jagr who've been reported by the media in the past week as heading to the Rangers. Lemieux shot down speculation he was leaving the Penguins, and the Blueshirts and Caps are denying a Jagr-Lindros trade. Thus far, however, we've heard nothing from the Flyers camp addressing the LeClair rumours. Could it be Larry Brooks of the NY Post may be right? Quick, check and see if the planets are aligned

WASHINGTON POST: Jason La Canfora reports NHL sources claim the Capitals are still attempting to find a taker for high-paid forward Jaromir Jagr, but are meeting with little success. It's believed the best fit would be the NY Rangers, but they're trying to dump Eric Lindros and possibly Pavel Bure, whom the Caps have no interest in. La Canfora claims the sources believe the Rangers still have interest in Jagr, but only if the Capitals absorb part of his hefty salary. It's believed GM George McPhee will continue to send out "feelers" to other teams regarding Jagr up to the June draft weekend. La Canfora reports other high-priced players are also believed being shopped by other NHL clubs, notably "John LeClair (Philadelphia; he would have to waive a no-trade clause); Jason Arnott, Pierre Turgeon and possibly Richard Matvichuk (Dallas); Radek Bonk (Ottawa); Nikolai Khabibulin (Tampa Bay); Jason Allison and Ziggy Palffy (Los Angeles); Vincent Damphousse (San Jose); Keith Tkachuk (St. Louis); Alexei Yashin (New York Islanders); and Martin Straka (Pittsburgh)." He writes the main reason is teams are seeking to slash payroll leading up to the next Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Capitals Sign Right Wing Boyd Gordon
2002 First-Round Draft Choice Agrees to Three-Year Deal

July 3 - The Washington Capitals today signed right wing Boyd Gordon to a three-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not released.

"Boyd Gordon is a well-rounded player," McPhee said. "He brings speed, offense and good defensive play to the organization. He was well coached at the junior level, and we expect that with continued development he will be a solid NHL player for many years."

Gordon, 19, joins defenseman Steve Eminger as the second player from Washington's 2002 draft class to sign with the club. The 6'0", 192-pound native of Regina, Sask., was selected as one of the Capitals' three first-round choices, 17th overall, in last year's entry draft in Toronto.

In 56 games with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League in 2002-03, Gordon finished with 33 goals, 48 assists and 81 points, ranking second on the team in all three categories while scoring a team-high four shorthanded goals. During the playoffs he led the Rebels with eight goals and added 12 assists to tie for the team lead with 20 points en route to a berth in the WHL finals.

Gordon also represented Canada in the 2003 World Junior Championships, earning a silver medal while appearing in six games. Gordon played in four games with the Capitals during the 2002 preseason, recording no points.

Throughout his four-year career with Red Deer, Gordon accumulated 77 goals and 130 assists for 207 points in 260 games. During the 2000-01 season he helped Red Deer win the Memorial Cup, signifying the championship of Canadian junior hockey.

July 2 - It took about a year longer than the team had hoped, but the Washington Capitals on Wednesday announced the signing of forward Petr Sykora to a one-year contract with an option for a second season. As per team policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
The Caps initially obtained the rights to Sykora from Nashville at the 2002 draft, surrendering a third-round pick to the Predators in the deal. The Caps considered Sykora to be one of the best players not skating in the NHL at the time of the trade.

Washington was unable to come to terms with Sykora last summer, and he skated for HC Pojistovna Pardubice in the Czech Republic Extraleague last season. Sykora totaled 18 goals and 36 points in 45 games in 2002-03, ranking third on the club in goals and fourth in points. Among players who spent the entire season with the club, Sykora was second in goals and third in points.

Nice Addition?
Sykora was originally drafted by Detroit with the Wings' second pick (76th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Just over a year later Sykora was swapped to Nashville along with a pair of draft picks in exchange for veteran forward Doug Brown. The Predators had claimed Brown from the Detroit roster in the Expansion Draft and the Wings were willing to give up Sykora and a pair of picks to get him back.

Sykora turned pro in the fall of 1998. He skated in two games with the Preds that season but spent most of the campaign with the Milwaukee Admirals of the now-defunct International Hockey League. Sykora totaled 14 goals and 29 points in 73 games with the Admirals. After just three games with the Admirals in 1999-2000, Sykora returned to his native Czech Republic where he has played since.

Petr Sykora Career Stats
Season Club GP G-A-Pts
1995-96 Pardubice (E-jun.) 26 13-9-22
1996-97 Pardubice 29 1-3-4

2001-02 Pardubice 38 15-10-25
2002-03 Pardubice 64 25-25-50
NHL Totals: 2 0-0-0
Sykora had 26 goals and 44 points in 47 games during the 2000-01 season and followed up with 18 goals and 26 points in 32 contests during the 2001-02 campaign.

In its ranking of the 1997 draft prospects, the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau rated Sykora as the eighth best European prospect. In their assessment of Sykora, the CSB wrote: "A natural talent with excellent hockey sense … an effective scorer who can be used in heavy traffic … improved as the season progressed, despite injuries … missed two weeks with a hand and five weeks with a leg injury … aggressive with the puck, goes straight to the net … needs to improve his foot speed and strength in legs which will help him to improve his acceleration and quickness."

The 6-foot-3 inch, 206-pound Sykora is a native of Pardubice. He will celebrate his 25th birthday in December. His brother Michal was a San Jose draft choice (sixth Sharks pick, 132nd overall) in 1992.

Defenseman Michal Sykora spent seven seasons in the NHL with San Jose, Chicago, Tampa Bay and Philadelphia. He has spent the last two seasons as a teammate of his brother with HC Pojistovna Pardubice.

Report: Capitals shopping Lang around

TSN.ca Staff

The Washington Post reported in its Thursday edition that the Capitals are shopping centre Robert Lang and are willing to assume a most of his salary in a trade.
Lang signed a five-year, $20 million contract with the Capitals last summer - the largest free agent deal in franchise history.
According to The Post, sources say General Manager George McPhee has spoken with several teams recently about Lang and told potential trade partners that the Capitals would pick up $1 million of Lang's $5 million salary for each of the four years remaining on the contract. Lang is Washington's third-highest-paid player behind Jagr and goaltender Olaf Kolzig ($6.25 million).
Sources also told The Post that the move was intensified after the team drew little interest in Jaromir Jagr, who earns $11 million a season. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has made it clear that the team is looking to slash its payroll after years of heavy financial losses.

Jagr has $55 million left on his deal and reports of trading the former Hart Trophy winner - likely to the New York Rangers - died down after the NHL Entry Draft in June.
