BOUCHER ODD MAN OUT?

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Bob McManaman reports the Phoenix Coyotes have yet to make a decision regarding their trio of netminders. There is widespread speculation the Coyotes will move veteran Sean Burke because of his contract and injuries which plagued him throughout the regular season and during the World Hockey Championships. Zak Bierk did a stellar job filling in for Burke and Brian Boucher when both were sidelined, posting outstanding numbers (2.17 GAA, .932 SP), is bigger than Boucher and cheaper ($600K vs $2 million). That's leading to suggestions Boucher could be the odd man out. Coyotes management has refused to comment on this situation. While dealing Boucher appears the easy solution, McManaman suggests it could cost the Coyotes should Burke again struggle with injuries and if Bierk turns out to be a "one-season wonder". Boucher says it's out of his hands and plans on training hard in preparation for next season, adding he hopes to remain with the Coyotes.

Spector's Note: An interesting situation. If Burke had stayed healthy throughout last season, this one would be a no-brainer, as Boucher would've been shopped at the deadline. With Burke's value still high, and bound to get higher with teams like Philadelphia, St. Louis and possibly Boston in the market for goaltending upgrades, the Coyotes might opt for a Boucher-Bierk tandem next season.

COYOTES TO SHOP NUMMINEN?

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: John Gambadoro reports "chances are strong" long-time Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Teppo Numminen may have played his last game for the club. Numminen was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause at the trade deadline because his wife was pregnant and he didn't wish to move his family. With his child now born, Numminen says he'd like to play for a Stanley Cup winner before his career is over. Given his hefty contract for next season ($5 million), it's doubtful the money-losing Coyotes will bring Numminen, but they won't give him up for nothing. Gambadoro claims there are "four or five teams" the veteran blueliner will accept a trade to, with " Detroit, Philadelphia, Colorado and St. Louis" being among them. The reporter believes the Flyers, starving for blueline depth, would be a perfect fit, with the possibility the deal could get bigger if goaltender Sean Burke were included in a package offer, given that the Flyers are trying to move Roman Cechmanek.

Spector's Note: A Numminen-Burke package would certainly attract a lot of interest from some of those "four or five clubs" mentioned in the report. The Blues would also want to get into the bidding, and if Patrick Roy retires, so would the Avalanche.

BURKE'S HEALTH CAUSE FOR COYOTES CONCERN?

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Bob McManaman reports a slew of injuries that afflicted Phoenix Coyotes starting goaltender Sean Burke, including a groin injury in the recent World Hockey Championships, may be cause for concern for management. Coyotes GM Michael Barnett is believed to be pondering which of his current netminding trio - Burke, Brian Boucher or Zak Bierk - he should move in the off-season. While Burke's performance when healthy last season was stellar and could suggest he's untouchable, the netminder isn't taking it for granted. Burke says he doesn't know what will happen, but believes it'll be resolved by training camp. McManaman reports Barnett has yet to tip his hand as to which goaltender he'll move. It's believed the Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins may be interested in Burke if the Coyotes shop him. Barnett claims if he were planning on moving Burke, he would've done it at the trade deadline.

Spector's Note: The absence of Burke due to injury was perhaps the key factor in the Coyotes inability to make the playoffs this season. Boucher failed to step up, and it's uncertain if Bierk can follow up his stellar play. Still, the Coyotes would probably like to pare down the payroll, and Burke is an attractive trade commodity, given the lack of quality goalie talent available in this summer's UFA market. If the right pitch were made, Barnett may bite.

The Phoenix Coyotes could trade goaltender Sean Burke, possibly to Colorado or St. Louis. They're believed interested in draft picks in return.

Spector's Note: If landing Burke could be done for a "draft pick or two", as Morganti suggests, the Blues wouldn't have re-signed Chris Osgood. And no, they would'nt be thinking of using "Ozzy" as a backup for Burke when Brent Johnson is already under contract and needs playing time. And no, they won't trade Johnson, or at least, not yet. Perhaps later in the season if he doesn't improve. Don't forget the Boston Bruins are also rumoured to be interested in Burke...

COULD THE COYOTES LET NUMMINEN WALK?

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Bob McManaman reported yesterday the Phoenix Coyotes have until midnight Monday to decide what to do with veteran blueliner Teppo Numminen. McManaman reports Numminen has a player option to re-sign with the Coyotes for another season at $5.5 million, while the team also has an option on him for a one-year deal at $4.5 million, although both sides could agree to split the difference and settle for $5 mil per season. Numminen hasn't given word as to his intentions, while it's believed the Coyotes are trying to reduce payroll for next season. If neither side decides to exercise their options, Numminen could become an unrestricted free agent, and the Coyotes would get a compensatory pick in next year's draft.

Spector's Note: An interesting development, although I think if the Coyotes and Numminen weren't going to exercise their options, the blueliner would've been aggressively shopped by the club, particularly during the draft weekend. I may be wrong, but I think the 'Yotes will re-sign him, but then could turn around during the season and try to find a market for him then.

NUMMINEN STILL ON THE BLOCK?

EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE: Jerry Brown reports the Phoenix Coyotes and Teppo Numminen will eventually part ways, despite Numminen picking up his one-year option with the club. The Coyotes still want to cut payroll and wish to land a veteran defenceman who can be a teacher to their young defence corps, something Brown suggests was not a strong suit of Numminen's. Potential destinations could include Toronto, New York and Dallas.

Spector's Note: My thanks to Rich Sanderson. The Coyotes probably won't find any takers for a while, given Numminen's salary and no-trade clause, which Brown pointed out in his article. I suspect the market will open up for him after mid-season, when over half of his salary has already been paid.

Coyotes re-sign Wilson to one-year deal

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed restricted free agent Landon Wilson to a one-year deal on Monday.
The right wing played 31 games for the Coyotes last season, recording six goals, eight assists and 26 penalty minutes.
He missed the last 51 games of the regular season because of an eye injury sustained during a game against Washington on Dec. 13.
Wilson has spent three seasons with the Coyotes after being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993.

Coyotes sign LW Cleary to multi-year deal

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Ticker) - The Phoenix Coyotes signed free agent left wing Daniel Cleary to a multi-year contract on Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cleary, 24, played 57 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season and had four goals and 13 assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.

"We're very pleased to add a player like Daniel Cleary to our exciting, young team," said Coyotes vice president and assistant general manager Laurence Gilman. "It's not often that you can pick up a 24-year-old who has played in over 250 NHL games without having to surrender an asset in return. Cleary will add depth to our forward ranks and provide us with both size and speed on the wing."

The 6-foot, 203-pound Cleary enjoyed his best season in 2000-01 with 14 goals and 21 assists for Edmonton.

A first-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1997, Cleary has played in 261 NHL games with Chicago and Edmonton, collecting 35 goals and 60 assists

Sydor, Numminen highlight three-way trade

Veterans players and draft picks were winging their way across North America Tuesday as three NHL teams pulled off a deal that sees veteran defenseman Teppo Numminen's long tenure with the Phoenix Coyotes end.

Numminen is now a member of the Dallas Stars, while fellow defenseman Darryl Sydor will now call the Columbus Blue Jackets his team and center Mike Sillinger is the newest Coyote.

Numminen and Columbus' second-round pick in the 2004 Entry Draft go to Dallas. Sillinger and an undisclosed draft pick go to Phoenix and Sydor ends up in Columbus.

For Numminen, the trade ends a 15-year association with the Phoenix franchise. He originally was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, the Coyotes' predecessor, in 1986 and debuted with the club in 1989-90. He made the move to Phoenix with the Coyotes and always has been a solid, dependable backliner. In all, Numminen appeared in 1,098 games with the Coyotes franchise, which puts him behind only Detroit's Steve Yzerman (1,378) for the player with the longest tenure with one club.

Last season, Numminen scored six goals and assisted on 24 others in 78 games. There was considerable speculation he would be traded to a Stanley Cup contender at the trade deadline, but Numminen stayed put until Tuesday. For his career, the Finnish Olympian has 108 goals and a total of 534 points.

He joins a veteran team in Dallas that has seen Derian Hatcher a fixture on the Stars' blue line -- sign with Detroit earlier this summer. As presently constituted, Numminen joins a defense corps that includes Philippe Boucher, Richard Matvichuk, Stephane Robidas, Don Sweeney and Sergei Zubov. In addition, John Erskine is a restricted free agent and Lyle Odelein is an unrestricted free agent.

"Teppo Numminen is a talented player who adds veteran leadership and experience to our defensive corps," Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong said. "He plays a solid game on both ends of the ice and is the consummate professional. We're very excited to add him to our team."

Columbus adds a 12-year veteran in Sydor, who was a first-round selection of the Los Angeles Kings in 1990. Last season, Sydor scored five goals and 31 assists and was a plus-22 in 81 games. In addition to good size at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, Sydor can run the point on the power play. For his career, Sydor has 82 goals and 323 assists in 863 regular-season games.

"Darryl Sydor is a perfect fit for our hockey club and I am ecstatic that we were able to bring him to Columbus," Columbus GM/coach Doug MacLean said. "Not only is he an excellent puck mover and strong power-play performer, but he is a winner having won a Memorial Cup championship in juniors and a Stanley Cup with the Stars. I've pursued Darryl for some time and I'm thrilled that he is a Blue Jacket."

Sillinger became available after the Blue Jackets signed centers Todd Marchant and Trevor Letowski as unrestricted free agents this summer. Sillinger also has spent parts of the last 12 seasons in the NHL, making the rounds from the Red Wings to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, to the Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and the Blue Jackets. In 75 games with the Blue Jackets last season, Sillinger scored 18 goals and 25 assists. For his career, Sillinger has scored 153 goals and 221 assists in 753 regular-season games.

COYOTES TO CHANGE LOGO & UNIFORM PRIOR TO THE START OF 2003-2004 SEASON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, June 19, 2003

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes President and Chief Operating Officer Douglas Moss announced today that the Coyotes will be changing the team's official logo as well as their home and road uniforms prior to the start of the 2003-2004 NHL season.

"We are excited to announce that we will be changing our logo and uniforms for next season," said Moss. "After more than a year of research and graphic design work, we have developed a new logo and uniform design that our fans are sure to be proud of. We anxiously await the unveiling in early September."

The Coyotes conducted extensive consumer research throughout the logo development process. The changes in the logo and uniform reflect a respect for the team's past while expressing optimism and excitement about the team's future. Following the direction provided by the fan research, an aggressive Coyotes logo was created that is indicative of the speed and grace of the sport of hockey with a distinct feel for the state of Arizona. The exciting new look incorporates some of the same colors and graphical elements from the previous logo.

The new logo and uniforms will be introduced to the public in early September. "It's an exciting time for our fans and our organization," added Moss. "Over a three months span, we will unveil our new logo and uniforms and move into our new home in Glendale."

WESTGATE

The Coyotes new home at the Glendale Arena (capacity 17,500) is the anchor and first building to be completed in the new 223-acre Westgate mixed-use project. Featuring over 6 million square feet of development, Westgate will host a variety of retail, residential, restaurant, entertainment, office and hotel uses. Once completed, the development is destined to become the heart of the West Valley's rapidly growing retail, entertainment and office landscapes, as well as the premier urban-village in the Southwest United States.

More information regarding the unveiling of the Coyotes new logo and uniform will be announced at a later date.

Coyotes retain rights to restricted free agent

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Phoenix Coyotes signed restricted free agent Chris Gratton to a one-year contract Monday.

Phoenix acquired the 6-foot-4, 225-pound center from Buffalo on March 10 in exchange for center Daniel Briere. The teams also swapped picks in the 2004 draft, with Buffalo acquiring Phoenix's third-round selection for a fourth-round pick.

Gratton, 28, is a playoff specialist who finished second in the NHL last season in faceoff percentage, winning a career-high 58.6 percent of the time. But he had just one assist in 14 games with Phoenix after leaving Buffalo as the Sabres' second-leading scorer.

Overall, he finished his 10th season with 15 goals and 45 points in 80 games. It was his sixth season with 40 or more points.
