MAPLE LEAFS NOT INTERESTED IN FIRST OVERALL PICK?

TORONTO SUN: Mike Zeisberger reported this past weekend that Florida Panthers GM Rick Dudley has received several inquiries regarding the availability of his first round pick, which is first overall in this year's entry draft. Dudley wouldn't say who the interested teams were, but has hinted he could part with the pick for the right price. The Panthers could shop the pick as they're very deep in goal, and prospect Marc-Andre Fleury's stock appears to be rising. The Toronto Maple Leafs are without a first round pick this year, having dealt it to San Jose in the Owen Nolan deal. MLSE president Richard Peddie said the club is evaluating it's roster, but any potential moves won't affect where the Leafs sit come draft day.

Spector's Note: The Panthers are believed seeking affordable, skilled veterans in return for the pick and possibly one of their young forwards. It won't surprise me if the Panthers, already well-stocked with budding youth, opts to deal the pick come draft day.

THE LATEST ON THE LEAFS SEARCH FOR DEFENCEMEN.

TORONTO SUN: Al Strachan reports the Toronto Maple Leafs are very interested in signing impending UFA defencemen Derian Hatcher or Greg de Vries. While Strachan will either be re-signed by the Stars or sign with the Red Wings, de Vries could be a potential signing by the Leafs. Strachan also suggested the Leafs may take a look at NJ Devils d-man Oleg Tverdovsky, who may not get a qualifying offer from the Devils this summer, effectively making him a UFA.

RALEIGH NEWS & OBSERVER: Luke DeCock reports former Hurricane and current Leafs defenceman Glen Wesley may be moving closer to signing with Toronto before he becomes eligible for UFA status on July 1. The Leafs are believed to have offered between $3-$4 million per season for two years to Wesley, who yesterday sent a counter-prosposal seeking an additional year. If the Leafs fail to re-sign him, Decock reports it's possible his former team the Hurricanes could attempt to sign him as a free agent.

TORONTO STAR: Ken Campbell reported earlier in the week the Maple Leafs already have $50.4 million US committed to it's roster for next season. That's not counting RFAs Bryan McCabe, Nik Antropov, Wade Belak, Paul Healey and Ric Jackman . It's believed RFA forward Jonas Hoglund won't get a qualifying offer, thus making him available for the UFA market on July 1. The Leafs also have to decide if they'll make an offer to UFA centre Doug Gilmour, and Campbell reports they won't re-sign impending UFA blueliner Phil Housley, whom they obtained along with Gilmour at the trade deadline.

Spector's Note: My thanks to "Jonathan" for sending in the Strachan rumour. If the Leafs get Wesley under contract, I don't see them pursuing Hatcher, but they could still make a pitch for de Vries. Their payroll looks to jump over $60 million if they re-sign all their RFAs as well as signing Wesley, de Vries and potentially Gilmour

SVEHLA TO RETURN TO THE MAPLE LEAFS?

TORONTO SUN: George Gross reports a phone call from Maple Leafs GM Pat Quinn to defenceman Robert Svehla may have convinced the veteran to "unretire" yet again and return to the Leafs next season. Concerned over the prospect of losing both Svehla and free agent blueliner Glen Wesley, Quinn contacted Svehla after the latter announced his retirement and asked him to reconsider. Svehla's agent, Rich Winter, said Quinn's phone call could convince his client, who apparently enjoyed playing for Quinn, to contact the Leafs this week to discuss a contract for next season.

Spector's Note: Give Quinn credit, he wasn't about to let pride get in his way regarding this subject. He knows losing Svehla to retirement and possibly Wesley to free agency would be a huge blow to his blueline corps. We'll find out in the coming days if Quinn's efforts to woo Svehla back to the Leafs were successful

LEAFS LOSE ONE DEFENCEMAN, TRY TO RETAIN ANOTHER.

TORONTO STAR/TORONTO SUN: both reported defenceman Robert Svehla won't be "unretiring" and returning to the Maple Leafs after all. Despite a personal plea from GM/coach Pat Quinn, Svehla has decided to remain retired. Meanwhile, negotiations on a new contract for Glen Wesley continue. Wesley's agent stated no deal was imminent yet but reported talks were progressing.

Spector's Note: My thanks to all of you who sent this in. With Svehla gone for certain, it's important for the Leafs to get Wesley under contract before he becomes eligible for UFA status. And don't hold out hope of landing Derian Hatcher, Leafs fans!

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports the Toronto Maple Leafs are "definitely interested" in signing Stars blueliner Derian Hatcher if he becomes a free agent this summer. Hatcher claimed he'd be interested in signing with the Detroit Red Wings, but didn't rule out the possibility of playing for the Maple Leafs. Hatcher says it depends on "who is there on July 1". Interestingly, Hatcher said there's been no recent talks between himself and the Stars on a new contract.

Doug Gilmour wird heute 40 und will weiterspielen

Toronto, 25. Juni NHL-Legende Doug Gilmour feiert heute seinen 40.

TORONTO (AP) -- Pat Quinn stepped aside as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday but still will be the team's head coach.
Quinn will continue as GM until a replacement is hired. He will have a say during the hiring process.
Richard Peddie, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment refused to say whether Quinn will have veto power on the new GM.
Ken Dryden also stepped aside as president of the Maple Leafs and is now vice chairman of MLSEL. He also will be a member of the board of directors. The Maple Leafs also said that assistant GM Bill Watters will not have his contract renewed.
The changes were made as a new ownership structure is assuming control of Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment, which owns the Maple Leafs and NBA's Toronto Raptors.
"We are not satisfied with our current level of success," Peddie said. "We expect more and our fans expect more."
Quinn became coach of the Maple Leafs in 1998 and added GM to his portfolio before the 1999-2000 season, when associate general manager Mike Smith had a falling out with the organization. Although he preferred to remain solely as coach, Quinn took on the GM's duties to protect his position.
Quinn has led the Maple Leafs to five straight playoff appearances, but the Original Six club hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

FEDOROV INTERESTED IN THE MAPLE LEAFS.

TORONTO STAR: reports the agent for Sergei Fedorov claims the Maple Leafs are one of the teams his client would be interested in playing for. Pat Brisson cited Fedorov's friendship with Mats Sundin, and his discussions with Alexander Mogilny and Tie Domi a week ago. However, signing Fedorov, who's apparently seeking more than the four year, $40 million contract the Red Wings had offered, would tear apart the Leafs salary structure.

Spector's Note: Leafs coach Pat Quinn says his club won't be major players in this summer's UFA market. I can't see how the Leafs could afford Fedorov's huge salary demands, with the current CBA set to expire in a year's time. If they're considering that, then they should forget about Fedorov and focus on the one thing they've lacked for years: a stud on the blueline, like, oh, say, Derian Hatcher!

Marchment signs with Maple Leafs

TORONTO (mapleleafs.com) - Pat Quinn, general manager and head coach, announced Friday that the Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms on a one year contract with unrestricted free agent defenceman Bryan Marchment.
