On the same day they lose defenseman Bryan Marchment, the Avalanche also confirmed Friday they have cut veteran winger Mike Keane.
Avalanche spokesman Hayne Ellis said the team had bought out the final year on the contract of the 36-year-old Keane.
The move ends the second stint with the Avalanche for Keane, who won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 before leaving for Dallas.
In his 15-year career, Keane has also won championships in Montreal (1993) and Dallas (1999). He played 65 games for Colorado last season, scoring five goals.
Avalanche sign forward Battaglia, defenseman Slovak and Skrastins
DENVER (coloradoavalanche.com) --The Colorado Avalanche has signed three players to contracts: defenseman Tomas Slovak to a multi-year deal and defenseman Karlis Skrastins and forward Bates Battaglia to one-year contracts.
"We expect Bates and Karlis to be strong contributors to our team this season," said Avalanche Assistant to the General Manager Greg Sherman. "Both are young NHL veterans who add depth to our lineup with their gritty and determined style of play. Tomas Slovak is a very promising prospect who we are looking upon to be a performer with our Club in the future."
Battaglia, 27, was acquired by the Colorado Avalanche on Mach 11, 2003 from the Carolina Hurricanes. The six-foot, two-inch, 205-pound native of Chicago, Illinois has recorded six goals and 19 assists with 100 penalty minutes in 2002-03 and had two assists to his credit in seven playoff games. He posted career-best totals of 21 goals and 25 assists in 2001-02, including five goals and nine helpers in 23 playoff contests.
Skrastins, 28, a six-foot, one-inch, 210-pound native of Riga, Latvia, joins the Avalanche having played in 307 NHL games with the Nashville Predators, including all 82 games each of the last three seasons. He finished his 2002-03 campaign with the NHL's third-longest active games played streak (269), posting the second-highest ice time per game average (20:17) among Predator skaters last season.
Slovak, a six-foot, one-inch, 205-pound defenseman, was acquired from the Nashville Predators on June 21, 2003. Last season, Slovak led the Western Hockey League with 20 assists in 19 playoff games, having led all WHL blueliners in scoring and assists during the regular season with totals of 18 goals and 53 assists for 71 points with 86 penalty minutes and a +29 plus/minus rating in 65 games. He paced the WHL with 41 power play helpers, and concluded the 2002-03 season second on the Kelowna roster in assists and fourth in points despite taking time away to perform for Slovakia at the 2003 World Junior Championships.

Oh man, die Avs. Nur Mädchen im Team.
Rock on, and on, and on...
John LeClair breaks down the left wing all alone, moves into the circle and cranks a wicked slap shot with zero hesitation. The baffled goaltender is left with no answers, just questions as the First Union Center's horn blazes and the crowd booms.
