CANADIENS SHOPPING FOR TOP THREE PICK?

THE FOURTH PERIOD.COM: citing Montreal's La Presse newspaper, reports Montreal Canadiens GM Andre Savard will be making offers to the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins in hopes of landing one of the top three picks in the 2003 entry draft, which is considered one of the deepest in years. La Presse believes Savard is most interested in dealing with Carolina, and could offer up veterans like defenceman Patrice Brisebois and forwards like Yannick Perreault and Andreas Dackell in a package offer, plus might throw in one of their highly-touted prospects.

Spector's Note: The mind-set in Montreal is obviously now on rebuilding with youth, so making a pitch for one of the top three picks makes sense. Still, Brisebois and either Perreault or Dackell plus a prospect probably isn't enough to land one of those high picks.

CANADIENS SHOPPING KOIVU?

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reported he was hearing talk of the Montreal Canadiens shopping their captain, centre Saku Koivu, who's coming off a career season.

Spector's Note: Don't believe everything you hear, Larry! That's not to suggest the Habs wouldn't move Koivu if, say, the Tampa Bay Lightning lost their mind and offered Vincent Lecavalier straight-up for Koivu. But that's not going to happen, nor will a trade of Koivu anytime soon.

HABS GM DENIES KOIVU ON THE BLOCK.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports Canadiens general manager Andre Savard denied a report in last Sunday's NY Post which suggested he was shopping team captain Saku Koivu.

Spector's Note: The Habs have plenty of veterans they could dump this summer (Patrice Brisebois, Patrick Traverse, Mariusz Czerkawski, Joe Juneau), but Koivu ain't one of them. See, Larry Brooks, I told you not to believe everything you're told...

Hall of Fame player returns to Montreal as GM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MONTREAL -- Bob Gainey is returning to the scene of his greatest triumphs.

Gainey, who as a Hall of Fame player helped lead the Montreal Canadiens to five Stanley Cups, was hired Monday as general manager of his old team. It has missed the playoffs four of the past five seasons despite one of hockey's highest payrolls.

Montreal provides me with a great challenge and a much different environment than the one I competed in the last 10 years," said Gainey, who spent that decade in Dallas.

"It is going to be different, it is going to be exciting, it is going to be testy, it is going to be tough, and it is going to be fun."

Gainey, who coached the Minnesota North Stars, moved with them to Texas and remained on the Stars' payroll after being replaced as general manager in January of 2000. He takes over from Andre Savard, who will become assistant general manager.

A Hall of Fame player, Gainey was captain of the Canadiens for the final eight of his 16 seasons in Montreal.

He won the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward from 1978-81, the first four years it was awarded. He captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1979, when the Canadiens won the last of four straight Stanley Cups.

Gainey takes over a team that finished 10th in the Eastern Conference despite a $46 million payroll.

Among the moves that failed were a trade for winger Mariusz Czerkawski, who scored only five goals and ended the season in the minors, and the signing of 36-year-old free agent Randy McKay, on the downside of his career. Czerkawski is owed $2.6 million next season and McKay is owed $2.125 million.

Savard also made a questionable deal for forward Donald Audette and suffered through a debacle involving defenseman Patrice Brisebois.

Brisebois, in the first season of a three-year deal paying him about $4 million per season, was booed by home fans and took time off due to stress in midseason.

Gainey praised Savard for stepping aside.

"This is a person who has expertise in the NHL for 30 years in many different capacities and in areas where I do not have expertise, and I'm going to need him," Gainey said of his predecessor.

Savard proved adept at drafting and restocking Montreal's development system but struggled at money management and player evaluation.

After retiring in 1989, Gainey was named coach of the North Stars in 1990 and led them to the Stanley Cup final in his first season.

In 1993, he moved with the team to Dallas, where it was renamed the Stars. In 1996, he left his coaching job to become GM full time.

The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 and lost in the final to New Jersey the following season.

Canadiens sign Ferland, Dagenais and Damphousse

MONTREAL (AP) -- Forward Pierre Dagenais and goaltender Jean-Francois Damphousse signed two-year deals with the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, while forward Jonathan Ferland agreed to a three-year contract.

Dagenais did not score in nine games with the Florida Panthers last season, but had 21 goals and 14 assists in 49 games with the AHL's San Antonio Rampage. In 60 career NHL games with New Jersey and Florida, Dagenais has 13 goals and six assists.

Damphousse played in 41 games with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and Saint John Flames last season. He posted a 17-19-4 record with a 2.92 goals-against average and .904 save percentage.

Ferland was the Canadiens' 212th overall pick in the 2002 NHL draft.

Ryder signs one-year deal with Habs

MONTREAL (canadiens.com)-- Canadiens' GM Bob Gainey announced Tuesday that forward Michael Ryder had agreed to terms with the team for the 2003-2004 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Ryder, 23, ranked second with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs in scoring in 2002-2003, recording 34 goals -- sixth-best in the AHL -- and 33 assists for 67 points in 69 games. He also totalled 43 penalty minutes and a plus-15 differential. Ryder led the Bulldogs in goals, was tied for the lead with Jason Ward in power-play goals with 10, and ranked third on the team with five game-winning goals. The St. Johns, Newfoundland native also led the Bulldogs to the Calder Cup finals with 17 points (11 goals and seven assists) in 23 playoff games, a total which placed him third in AHL playoff scoring.

The Canadiens selected Ryder in the 8th round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, 216th overall.
