STARS OWNER, GM TO EXAMINE ROSTER.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Chuck Carlton reports Stars owner Tom Hicks, who has taken his club off the market, plans to meet with GM Doug Armstrong next week to discuss the roster and what changes, if any, will be made prior to next season. Hicks remains confident his club can win the Stanley Cup, but while he praised his veteran nucleous, he added his team needed to "process fresh blood like Brenden Morrow and Niko Kapanen into our lineup" The club's payroll is presently at $66 million, and Hicks says it won't go above that for next season, despite captain Derian Hatcher and goalie Marty Turco expected to seek significant raises. Hicks doesn't expect his club to get involved in the unrestricted free agent market this summer, given the prospect of a league shutdown after the 2003-04 season.

Spector's Note: If the payroll won't be raised, that means veterans like Claude Lemieux, Ulf Dahlen and Kirk Muller will certainly be cut. It could further fuel speculation defenceman Richard Matvichuk might be on his way out to free up more room in the payroll to re-sign Hatcher and Turco. Some Stars fans would love to see Pierre Turgeon and Scott Young traded, but with their hefty salaries, that's not likely to happen.

CHANGES COMING FOR DALLAS STARS?

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reported on May 4th that Dallas Stars defenceman Richard Matvichuk's days with the club "could be numbered". Matheson claims the Stars will attempt to dump his $2.2 mil per season salary to free up room on their payroll to re-sign other free agent Stars. He claims Matvichuk might be shopped to either the Florida Panthers or Atlanta Thrashers, two clubs who are seeking veteran depth for their respective bluelines. The Stars apparently would be interested in Atlanta forward Slava Kozlov or Florida forward Niclas Hagman. Matheson also suggests Darryl Sydor could be "on the bubble". Key Stars to be re-signed include team captain Derian Hatcher (an unrestricted free agent) and goaltender Marty Turco.

Spector's Note: I could understand the Stars looking to free up some salary to re-sign Hatcher and Turco, but it doesn't make any sense for them to trade for someone like Kozlov, who'd be making as much, if not more, next season. Remember, he's also a UFA. Word out of Atlanta, however, is the Thrashers want to keep Kozlov, and he hopes to stay. In the wake of the Stars second-round upset by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, I think we can expect a lot more speculation over potential off-season moves by the Stars!

HATCHER OPEN TO FREE AGENT OFFERS?

NATIONAL POST: Howard Berger reports Dallas Stars defenceman and captain Derian Hatcher will be open to "any and all" free agent offers this summer if the Stars fail to re-sign him. Hatcher becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if he and Dallas management fail to reach terms on a new deal. Hatcher said he'd listen to offers "from a team in Canada, in Florida or in California."

Spector's Note: Berger believes the Toronto Maple Leafs would be very interested in landing Hatcher if he's available this summer. Lord knows they could use him, but the Leafs would be in a major bidding war for his services. The NY Rangers would love to have Hatcher's grit and leadership on their blueline.

THE LATEST DALLAS STARS NEWS.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Chuck Carlton reported last week Stars defenceman and team captain Derian Hatcher would be hotly pursued by several teams, including the Philadelphia Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs, if he opts to test the free agent market in July. However, Stars GM Doug Armstrong is determined not to let that happen, despite the fact the club won't be increasing their payroll of $66 million US next season. Armstrong said re-signing Hatcher would be his top priority, and plans to work with owner Tom Hicks to find a way to "work Hatcher into the budget". Meanwhile, restricted free agent defenceman Richard Matvichuk, long the subject of trade rumours this season, said he wants to remain with the club, even while acknowledging he struggled through most of the '02-'03 season. Veteran forwards Kirk Muller and Ulf Dahlen, slated for UFA status in July, also expressed their desire to return to the Stars for one more season.

Spector's Note: I'll be shocked if the Stars fail to re-sign Hatcher. I just don't see them giving him up. Matvichuk, Muller and Dahlen could, however, end up being cut to make room in the payroll for Hatcher's and goaltender Marty Turco's raises.

PIERRE TURGEON AN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

RDS.CA: reports radio station CKAC as claiming the Dallas Stars have bought out the contract of veteran centre Pierre Turgeon, making him eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer. Turgeon signed with the Stars as a UFA in July 2001 to a contract worth $6 million per season, but this past season played only 65 games, scoring 12 goals and adding 30 assists.

Spector's Note: My thanks to R. Chehabi for sending this in. It was expected the Stars would begin dumping some veteran salaries, but this was a bit surprising. Looks like the Stars have decided to cut their losses with Turgeon.

UPDATE ON PIERRE TURGEON.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports Stars GM Doug Armstrong has placed forward Pierre Turgeon on waivers, and has not, as was reported yesterday by a Montreal radio station, been bought out of his contract. However, that could be a possibility should Turgeon clear waivers as expected by next Wednesday. Turgeon presently has three-years remaining on his contract worth $20.7 million with a no-trade clause for next season. The Stars could buy out two-thirds of that, but Armstrong said that was too expensive, and would pay the forward through the 2004-05 season, when the league is expected to be shut down because of labour negotiations. Heika reports the Stars could buy him out at a reduced rate but only if Turgeon agrees to it. The reporter suggests the Stars could make the veteran's life with the club difficult by sending him to the minors if he doesn't agree to the buyout. Armstrong says he'll comment further after next Wednesday.

Spector's Note: If Turgeon's smart, he'll take the reduced buyout and take his chances on the UFA market. The Stars have now made it clear he no longer fits into their plans, and no amount of money in the world is worth being with an organization that no longer appreciates you or wants you. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

INABILITY TO DUMP TURGEON TO BE COSTLY FOR STARS?

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Chuck Carlton reports Stars centre Pierre Turgeon cleared waivers today, as no other clubs were willing to take on the hefty salary of an apparently declining forward. Stars GM Doug Armstrong admitted he'd approached Turgeon about a contract buyout but the veteran wanted no part of it. This means Turgeon could remain with the team when training camp opens in the fall. Worse, Carlton suggests the inability to dump Turgeon's salary could make it difficult for the Stars to re-sign impending UFA defenceman Derian Hatcher. They may also be unable to re-sign other impending UFAs like Kirk Muller and Ulf Dahlen, and could explore the possibility of dealing defencemen Richard Matvichuk (a Group II free agent) and/or Darryl Sydor to free up room in the payroll to retain Hatcher.

Spector's Note: This isn't a surprising development for Armstrong, who I'm certain anticipated this. Hoping another club would claim Turgeon off waivers was a long shot, as was hoping the veteran would agree to a buyout. I'm convinced they'll re-sign Hatcher, but it will come at the cost of giving up players like Muller and Dahlen, and one or both of those defencemen noted above.

STARS TO EXPLORE TRADE OPTIONS WITH TURGEON?

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports the agent for centre Pierre Turgeon won't accept any contract buyout proposals from the Stars, but he is open to studying "a potential trade". Bob Sauve also claimed the Stars received several trade inquiries regarding his client when he was put on waivers, some of which Turgeon may wish to consider. Sauve said his client might consider waiving his no-trade clause if "a particularly good team makes a particularly good offer" to the Stars.

Spector's Note: My thanks to Chris Dawson for this one. Obviously no team is willing to take on the $20 million remaining on Turgeon's contract, so the Stars would have no choice but to "eat" a portion of his salary to move him. No word on who the interested teams may be, and Turgeon's no-trade clause will ensure he won't go to just anyone. One team that could use some help at centre is the Montreal Canadiens, but given how shabbily Turgeon was treated as a member of the Habs in the mid-90s, I doubt he'd be willing to repeat the experience.

STARS WON'T RE-SIGN MULLER AND DAHLEN.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports Stars GM Doug Armstrong has informed impending UFA forwards Kirk Muller and Ulf Dahlen he won't be re-signing them for next season. Armstrong told the two he had other contracts to consider, most notably defenceman Derian Hatcher and goaltender Marty Turco. Dahlen said he respected Armstrong's decision, and may return to Sweden to finish his playing career, although he didn't rule out the possibility of playing in the NHL next season, provided an offer comes along in time. Muller plans to test the UFA market.

Spector's Note: My thanks to Chris Dawson. This comes as no surprise, in fact, it was inevitable. The Stars must re-sign Hatcher and Turco, and that comes at the expense of lesser lights like Muller and Dahlen.

STARS TO BUY OUT ZUBOV?

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: Tim Panaccio reports of speculation the Dallas Stars may buy out the contract of defenceman Sergei Zubov. The rationale behind this rumour is the Stars attempts to free up space in their payroll to re-sign defenceman Derian Hatcher and goaltender Marty Turco, both free agents this summer. Panaccio believes Zubov, who makes $6 million next season and is signed through to the 2004-05 season, would be an ideal fit on the Flyers blueline, although they too have payroll concerns, particularly with a potential labour war looming in 2004.

Spector's Note: Wishful thinking. The Stars will move Matvichuk or Sydor before they'll part with the smooth-skating Zubov.

THE LATEST ON THE DALLAS STARS.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports "a trusted league management source" claims the Dallas Stars are making it known that winger Bill Guerin is available to any team willing to absorb the remainder of his five-year, $45 million US contract. Brooks does acknowledge the fact Guerin has a "no-trade" clause in his contract. The supposed basis for this is the Stars wish to free up room in their payroll to re-sign team captain Derian Hatcher, an unrestricted free agent this summer.

BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont reports Stars owner Tom Hicks wants his club's payroll trimmed from it's current $66 million to $49 million. Dupont believes defencemen Richard Matvichuk and Daryl Sydor, along with forward Jason Arnott, are certain to be "dumped" this summer.

Spector's Note: Odd how these rumours appear in Boston and New York, yet there's been nothing about these in the Dallas sports media. Anyway, Stars management denied the story about Hicks seeking a dramatic payroll slash about two weeks ago. Matvichuk, Sydor and Arnott, however, have been popping up in trade rumours since April. As for the Guerin story, consider the source....

-Finally, the Dallas Stars will do everything they can to re-sign captain Derian Hatcher, even if they have to trade Bill Guerin to do it.

Spector's Take: If teams aren't willing to trade for guys like Jagr and LeClair with their big contracts, they won't take the plunge for Guerin, either.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that the Stars are asking Sergei Zubov, Bill Guerin and Mike Modano to restructure their contracts so they can re-sign Derian Hatcher.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post claims the Stars have been offering Bill Guerin to the New York Rangers for the past three weeks. He threw in that Columbus is interested in Pierre Turgeon if the Stars pay $12 million of the $20 million left on Turgeon's contract.

Wayne Fish of Phillyburbs.com reports that there was talk in Nashville on Saturday that the Flyers and Stars were talking about a John LeClair for Bill Guerin trade.

It's day one of the draft in the NHL with just a few hours to go the rumors remain the same. Various media outlets, including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, speculate that Richard Matvichuk, Jason Arnott or Darryl Sydor rank at the top of possibility of players that might be traded. The Bill Guerin rumor showed up in a couple USA Today, The New York Times and Halifax Daily Herald.
June 20, 2003
With the draft one day away the trade rumors continue to swirl, but no major new ones concerning the Stars. The Toronto Globe and Mail lists Richard Matvichuk and Darryl Sydor as players who could be traded by the Stars. The Globe and Mail added that the Stars are asking a "steep" price for anyone who wants Matvichuk.

Bob Duff of NBCSports.com basically repeated the rumor about the possibility of the Stars trading Bill Guerin and that Mike Modano is not untouchable. Matvichuk, Arnott, Pierre Turgeon and Ron Tugnutt were also mentioned as possibilities.

The Buffalo News also threw out Guerin's name as a player who was reportedly being shopped around. In fact, the quote read: "The Dallas Stars would love to part with Bill Guerin ($8.86 million)."

Hatcher done in Dallas?

Associated Press

6/23/2003

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Defenceman Derian Hatcher will become an unrestricted free agent next week because the Dallas Stars aren't willing to offer their longtime captain a five-year contract extension.

General manager Doug Armstrong said Monday that the Stars won't offer Hatcher a new contract before July 1, when the team's exclusive period of negotiation ends. After that, Hatcher - the Stars captain for nine seasons - can go to the highest bidder.

``The main sticking point is the term of the contract ... we never got past the five years,'' Armstrong said. ``If the contract length changes from Derian's perspective, we've kept the door open and been upfront that we want him to be a Dallas Star.''

But Armstrong said there won't be any more contract discussions with Hatcher and his agent, Patrick Morris, before July 1.

Hatcher is likely to demand an annual salary of at least $7 million. Armstrong wouldn't discuss potential dollar amounts, but said the talks with Hatcher never got to money because of the defenceman's demand for a five-year contract.

"Derian's very optimistic and excited about the opportunities that free agency present," said Hatcher's agent Pat Morris, when contacted by TSN Monday night.

While the Stars are still likely to make an offer to their Captain after July 1, their chances of keeping him would appear to have dimished significantly.

"With Dallas' decision, they certainly run the risk of other choices being made," Morris said.

Armstrong said he offered Hatcher a five-year extension before last season. When a deal couldn't be worked out then, the Stars moved forward and attained free agents Bill Guerin, Scott Young and Philippe Boucher.

With the NHL's collective bargaining agreement set to expire after next season, and uncertainty about what will happen after then, Armstrong said the Stars will avoid any long-term deals until those issues are settled.

Hatcher has played 827 regular-season games and 100 playoff games in his 12-year career, all with the Stars. That includes 23 post-season games in 1999, when the Stars won their only Stanley Cup.

Last season, Hatcher had 30 points (eight goals and 22 assists). He was a finalist for the Norris Trophy given to the NHL's best defenceman.

``He had a phenomenal season and he played himself into a position where he'll be a very attractive free agent,'' Armstrong said.

Armstrong said he is torn by the situation, in one way hoping for the best for Hatcher in the free agent market and also hoping there is a way he will be back in a Stars uniform with a shorter-term contract.

``I consider him a close friend and a great player, and I hope he gets everything he's dreamed of getting in the free agent market,'' he said. ``On the other hand, I hope the market isn't quite what he thinks and he comes back and we are able to work out a deal with him. I understand the value of Derian Hatcher.''

Hatcher set career highs with 159 shots and a plus-37 rating last season, helping the Stars to the most points in the Western Conference.

Even if Hatcher leaves, Armstrong believes that the Stars will be a favourite for the Stanley Cup next season. They would have Boucher, Sergei Zubov, Darryl Sydor and Richard Matvichuk as the core group of defenceman.

Matvichuk, who has been with the Stars for 11 years, is a restricted free agent. Armstrong said the team will be offering him a new deal in the next couple of weeks.
