Irving, 24. TSN.CA/ASSOCIATED PRESS: reports the Dallas Stars announced last night they will not tender a contract to defenceman and team captain Derian Hatcher, who is eligible for unrestricted free agent status on July 1. GM Doug Armstrong stated that Hatcher's seeking of a five-year contract was more than the club was prepared to offer him.
Spector's Note: My thanks to all of you who sent this in. I have two words to describe my reaction to this story: the first word is "Holy", and the second, well, let's just call it "expletive deleted". Honestly, I'm in shock. Things are now so tight financially for the Stars, largely because of all those big free agent signings they made over the last two years, that they cannot afford to keep one of their core players, who's also their best defenceman. Evidently, no one is willing to take the players off their hands (Matvichuk, Turgeon, even Guerin) to free up the cash they need to re-sign Hatcher.
As one of my readers put it, let the bidding war begin! Or will it? The landscape regarding deals for big-money players and big-ticket UFAs has changed. Hatcher might find the pickings slim, although the Red Wings have definite interest if Sergei Fedorov is a goner, and the NY Rangers will make a play for him if Brian Leetch decides to walk...
Irving, 27.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports the Stars may not entirely close the door on re-signing defenceman Derian Hatcher. Although they cannot sign him to the five-year, $7 million per season salary he's apparently seeking, Stars management would like to be the first in line to discuss a reduced contract if Hatcher is unable to land that kind of deal on the unrestricted free agent market. If so, the Stars would look at moving some players in order to make room in their payroll, which isn't to exceed the $66 million cap ownership has placed on it. The Stars already have $59 million tied up in guaranteed contracts for next season, with the remainder to go on players (such as goaltender Marty Turco) they want to re-sign. It's believed the Stars are still shopping centre Pierre Turgeon and may buy out the remainder of forward Claude Lemieux's contract. The Stars will not be major players in this summer's UFA market, but may look at landing a "seventh defenceman" and could try to get one for around $600 K later on in the summer.
Spector's Note: If this were any other summer, it would be laughable to suggest that a defenceman of Hatcher's calibre wouldn't find the kind of deal he's seeking on the UFA market. But this isn't any other summer, and with many teams intent on maintaining or cutting their payrolls, it's not farfetched to suggest Hatcher might not find that kind of deal.
The Dallas Stars are reportedly close to signing free agent defenseman Don Sweeney from the Boston Bruins. "There is nothing done, but he is a player we are interested in," Stars GM Doug Armstrong tells the Dallas Morning News. "He fits an area where we have a need." The Bruins have reportedly told the 36 year old they will not attempt to re-sign him for the upcoming season.
Sweeney has been with the Bruins his entire NHL career. He had three goals and five assists in 67 games last season, averaging 13 minutes of playing time. That was down from the 20-minutes of ice time he saw a year ago. Sweeney is expected to take a pay cut from the $1.8-million he earned last season with the Bruins in order to join the Stars. Sweeney was selected by the Bruins in the eighth round of the 1984 draft but was always considered a longshot to make the NHL due to his size. Four years after being selected, Sweeney finally got his shot with the Bruins and the following year he became a permanent fixture on the roster. He would go on to play 1,052 games, leaving him him third on the all-time list behind Ray Bourque and Johnny Bucyk. "What can I say, he was just terrific for us," Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell tells the Boston Herald. "I'm amazed, though maybe I shouldn't be, at the length of his service with the Bruins and I wish him all the best and nothing but success."
DALLAS (dallasstars.com) -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has signed defenseman Don Sweeney to a one-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
"Don's a defenseman with over 1,000 NHL games experience who will bring stability and depth to our defensive unit," said Armstrong. "He strengthens our hockey club and will provide a veteran presence in our locker room."
Sweeney, 36, appeared in 67 games with the Boston Bruins last season, registering three goals and five assists for eight points with 24 penalty minutes. The St. Stephen, New Brunswick, native appeared in his 1,000th NHL game on Nov. 14 vs. the New York Islanders, becoming the 180th player in NHL history to play in 1,000 games. Appearing in five post-season contests against New Jersey in 2003, Sweeney posted one assist and played in his 100th career NHL playoff outing in Game Two of the series on Apr. 11.
The 5-10, 185-pound defenseman had played his entire 15-year NHL career with the Bruins from 1988-2003. A veteran of 1,052 NHL games, Sweeney has posted 52 goals and 210 assists for 262 points with 663 penalty minutes over his career. He has also appeared in 103 career playoff outings, tallying nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points with 79 penalty minutes. During the 1990 playoffs with Boston, Sweeney set playoff career-highs in games played (21), assists (5) and points (6) as the Bruins lost to Edmonton in the Stanley Cup Finals.
An eighth round draft pick (166th overall) by Boston in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, Sweeney collected his best offensive season in 1992-93 when he notched career-highs in games played (84), assists (27) and points (34). Having played his amateur hockey at Harvard University from 1984-88, Sweeney was named an NCAA East All-American in 1988 in addition to receiving First Team ECAC All-Star honors. He earned his degree from Harvard in Economics.
