Junior hockey: Gamblers stun No. 1 RoughRiders

ASHWAUBENON — The Green Bay Gamblers mobbed Eric Pfligler in congratulations as the final horn sounded in Friday night’s game against Cedar Rapids.
The Gamblers’ goaltender certainly deserved his teammates’ praise as he earned his second straight shutout and led Green Bay (23-15-5) to a 3-0 win over the RoughRiders in front of a season-high crowd of 4,639 at Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Pfligler stopped all 22 shots he faced and extended his scoreless streak to eight periods as the Gamblers won their third straight.
“I’ve just been real confident and playing really well,” Pfligler said. “Whenever you get back-to-back shutouts, that gives you a lot of confidence, especially for the playoffs.”
The turning point came early in the third period. With the Gamblers clinging to a 1-0 lead and Cedar Rapids on a power play, Gamblers center Chris Michael stole the puck in the RoughRiders zone.
Michael then put a shot on Cedar Rapids goaltender Bobby Goepfert, who gave up the rebound. Right wing Joe Crabb put the puck home to give the Gamblers a 2-0 lead and a little breathing room.
“We look at it as we want to create offense out of the penalty kill,” Osiecki said of the Gamblers’ unit, which has scored a United States Hockey League-high 11 shorthanded goals. “Chris Michael did a great job defensively of reading the play, and it was good to see (Crabb) bury it.”
Unlike the Gamblers 2-0 win over Waterloo on Wednesday night, the offense was fluid and effective against the first-place RoughRiders, especially in the third period.
Green Bay dominated the final period, outshooting the RoughRiders 21-6 and holding Cedar Rapids to virtually no scoring chances.
“We want to play like the old (Chicago) Blackhawks style where they’re a bunch of crazed dogs out there going nuts,” Osiecki said. “That’s how our team has to be. We have to play energy and keep that energy up.”
